SAMBA launches free trails web app

SAMBA would like to announce the release of our new trails web app. You can access our free trails map at sambatrails.bike in your mobile and desktop web browser. This map features all of the trail systems where SAMBA has been involved and locations of our local sponsors. No need to download a native app, when you can access all of our trails from your phone’s web browser! Use the location button to find yourself out on the trail and tap the trail to view the elevation profile. When traveling to areas with no cell coverage, like Rattling Creek, open the web app before you go, zoom to your trail and make sure your GPS location is turned on. This will give you an online feel even when outside of cell range. Check back soon to view upcoming ride schedules that will be posted under the menu. What are you waiting for? Visit: https://sambatrails.bike/ Cheers!...

Paxtang Park is open!

GPS Coordinates for Directions:  40°15’23.0″N 76°49’55.4″W During the Fall of 2017 the plan was revealed to begin work to restore historic Paxtang Park on City Park Dr. between Derry St. and Paxton St. after cyclists began visiting Harrisburg to explore the Parkway Trails. The initial work to restore the park began in 2018 as SAMBA volunteers cleared the park of trash and tamed decades of overgrown vegetation. City workers assisted with clearing dead trees that were repurposed in the park.  Pennsy Supply made a generous donation of stone, Boy Scouts built the kiosk and the rest of the fundraising and work to restore the park was carried out by SAMBA’s volunteers. We are looking forward to a time when it is appropriate to host an official Grand Opening event in the park. Why restore the park? 1) The park is an important part of local history and served as the hub for recreation in Harrisburg during the early 1900s. The trolley line from Market square ended at the site and there was a popular amusement park, swimming pool, picnic area, lake and theater. 2) The location of the park is the center of the Parkway Trail System and an ideal parking and meeting area for visiting cyclists using the Parkway Trails or Capital Area Greenbelt. The parking area can accommodate 16 vehicles, making the location ideal for group rides to meet (eventually) and great starting point for visitors exploring the trails. 3) This will be an important cycling infrastructure improvement for the area as users are directed to this lot and away from some of the smaller, overcrowded parking areas....

COVID-19 UPDATE from IMBA/SAMBA

To our friends and partners in mountain biking, Getting out on the trails is tremendously valuable. Trails bring us together, but to keep each other safe, we must keep our distance. How can our community navigate this challenge? First and foremost, refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for best practices, as well as guidelines from your state and local governments. Then, as appropriate, cautiously take advantage of trails and outdoor spaces unless you are feeling ill. We will all benefit from fresh air. Should mountain bikers host group rides or trail work days? Cancel, postpone or reschedule upcoming events including races, trail work, and group rides until there are new government directives. For now, let’s ride in very small groups, keep our distance, and enjoy our trails close to home to minimize the risks associated with car travel. How can trail users pass responsibly with social distance? Stay alert, slow down, and communicate with each other from a distance about how to proceed. With gyms and rec centers closing, there may be new users on the trails. It’s a great time for community education on responsible riding and for being patient, exemplary stewards. Thanks for reading. Stay safe! SAMBA...

HMC East Side Trails Closed effective December 1st, 2019

Notice: Starting December 1st, 2019, HMC Trails on the East side will be closed for the next two months. Penn State is implementing a land management plan that involves the removal of invasive species and creating a healthy forest. Unfortunately, this will involve timbering the east side. DO NOT RIDE ON THE EAST SIDE. West trails will remain open. Pending weather, it is expected that the foresting will be completed by mid-February 2020. This will be a three-year project so expect closures during the next few winters. Penn State has been an excellent partner and we look forward to cooperating with their contractor for the duration of this...

CAMP MACK CLOSED

Camp Mack will be closed to mountain bikes until further notice. SAMBA is working to resolve the issues and we’ve had some good discussions with the Land Manager. We are optimistic that we can reach a new arrangement in the coming months. Kindly do not ride at the camp until we are able to negotiate a new access agreement. Riding during this time will make it more difficult to restore the access. This includes all roads and trails within the camp and includes nights and Sundays. Thank You for your cooperation and...
